Boys trip in the VW Kombi campervan

A boys trip to the Alpine National Park hiring a Volkswagen campervan
4 mates. One week off work. One seriously capable off-road campervan. That’s all we needed to load up the Volkswagen Multivan T6.1 from USQUAM Campers and head south from NSW to the Alpine National Park in Victoria for a proper boys off-grid adventure.
Between the powerful 4Motion system, the rooftop tent, the premium kitchen and the full off-grid electrical system, this little Kombi turned into the perfect basecamp on wheels.
Here’s how the trip went — and why we’d recommend this setup to anyone searching for off-road campervan hire in New South Wales.
Why we chose the VW Kombi campervan
We wanted something compact, capable, and quick to set up. Something that didn’t require hours of fiddling around after a long day on the tracks. This VW Kombi checked every box:
- 4Motion AWD
- Automatice transmission
- Full underbody protection
- Hill descent control
- Comfortable sleeping for 4 (2 in the rooftop tent and 2 in the van)
- Off-grid power for days (including solar)
- Kitchen setup and fridge
We cooked, charged, chilled drinks, and ran lights without ever needing a caravan park.
Leaving NSW and hitting the open road
Pick-up from USQUAM in Smithfield was easy. Rob gave us a full walkthrough of the van, how the rooftop tent works, and the quick setup of the VanEssa kitchen. Within 20 minutes, we were ready to go.
The drive down through the Snowy Mountains and into northern Victoria was effortless. The Volkswagen Multivan is a very comfortable drive.
The mood was set early: this trip was going to be relaxed, simple, and full of laughs.
Into the Alpine National Park
Once we hit the dirt, the Multivan came alive. Soft ruts, rockier climbs, and long gravel passes were all handled smoothly thanks to the extra clearance, all-terrain tyres, and rear locker. We were all expecting the van to struggle on the steeper, looser sections — but it walked up everything we pointed it at. No wheelspin. No stress. Just grip and grunt.
Setting up camp: beer in one hand, rooftop tent in the other
We honestly spent less than five minutes on camp setup each night — which left more time for what a boys trip is actually about: grilling, talking rubbish, exploring, and unwinding.
Sleeping was legit comfortable too. The rooftop tent felt like a hotel room with a view, and the bed in the van had heaps of room for two adults.
Nights were spent around the fire, telling stories, laughing, and listening to nature around us – it was exactly what a boys trip should be.
We can’t wait to hire a camper from USQUAM again
If you’re searching for campervan hire in NSW, VW Kombi hire, off-road campervan rental, or a van that can handle the Victorian Alps, this is the one.
We’re already talking about where to take it next — Kosciuszko, Barrington Tops, maybe even the Grampians. And we’ll definitely be doing it with Rob’s Volkswagen Multivan.
